These shape got a flat emitting top. With this shape, this LED will got wider viewing angle than the 3mm or 5mm round top LED. On the other hand, this shape of LED have a small size, which can be more easier to fit with your project when you don't have that much space to install the LED.  As we know, LED bare die can be package with variety of shape and lens.
